A Brief History

 

Cebu, the Philippines’ oldest city, traces its name to “Sibu,” meaning trade—a fitting label as Cebu thrives as a historic trading port. In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan arrived, planted the iconic Magellan’s Cross, and brought Catholicism to the islands. Though Magellan was killed in Mactan shortly after, Miguel López de Legazpi returned in 1565, establishing Spanish colonial rule. Fort San Pedro was built the same year, and Colon Street followed as the nation’s oldest thoroughfare.

Over centuries, Cebu endured Spanish, American, and World War II Japanese occupations, yet rose again as a thriving cultural and commercial hub. The city was chartered in 1937, and today it blends historic charm with modern dynamism.

Citizens of over 150 countries may enter the Philippines without a visa for 14 to 59 days, depending on nationality.

  • Proof of financial capacity or sponsor letter

  • Roundtrip flight itinerary
