Quality of Life in Patients with Lumbar Failed Back Surgery Syndrome after Removal of Implant a -single-center Retrospec-tive Study

Introduction: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome is a rare complication after surgical intervention and can have devastating effect to the patients. This study aimed at identifying quality of life of patients with failed back surgery syndrome after surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and after removal of implant.

Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study with cross-sectional design. We evaluate patients since January 2022 – December 2024 at Ulin General Hospital, a referral Hospital in Banjarmasin, Indonesia. The inclusion criteria including all patients who underwent open surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis, diagnosed as had failed back syndrome, underwent removal of implant, and had complete data. ECOS-16 Questionnaire in Bahasa Indonesia was used as evaluating tool.

Results: 6 patients (9,7%) from 62 patients operated was diagnosed failed back surgery syndrome. The Quality of Life was decreased in all 4 domains evaluated. Among them 4 underwent removal of implant and had their Quality of Life improved.

Discussion: Failed Back Syndrome is a known condition with severe morbidity. Many possible causes were described and the management could be very challenging. Quality of Life is an important factor to be considered and we found that removal of implant can increase their Quality of Life.

Conclusion: Failed Back Syndrome still remain a complication to be aware of as it can affect Quality of Life of the patients.
